Plot summary
In 1688, a priest in western Scotland who leads an unorthodox congregation is arrested for heresy. Agnes witnesses his execution and becomes enamored with him, then tries to save him. An axe strikes her by accident, and as she dies she vows to find him again. Scipio, an onlooker, draws the scene. A century on, Agnes has come back to life in rural England, married to the domineering George. She confides in her handmaiden Meg that she is unhappy. She finds Alex again, now a highwayman, and a romance seems to begin. Scipio, working as their servant, urges Agnes to stand up to George, who burns her books in response.
