Joseph Maher
Biography
Joseph Maher was an Irish actor and playwright who also directed for the theater at times. Born in Westport, County Mayo, he moved to Canada in 1956, worked for an oil company, and began acting with the Canadian Players, touring Canada for three years before settling in New York. On Broadway he appeared in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, King Henry V, The Royal Family, Night and Day, and Loot. He became best known for performing in comedies by Joe Orton, and his stage work brought three Tony Award nominations, for Spokesong, Night and Day, and Loot; the last won him a Drama Desk Award. He also earned an Obie Award and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award. His films included For Pete's Sake (1974), Heaven Can Wait (1978), Time After Time (1979), The Evil That Men Do (1984), My Stepmother Is an Alien (1988), Funny Farm (1988), Sister Act (1992), I.Q. (1994), and The Shadow (1994).
