Plot summary
The Mars I mission reaches the red planet in 2020 under Luke Graham's command, and its crew finds, in the Cydonia region, a bright white formation they suspect is an extrusion of a subsurface water column that could support future colonization. They report it to the World Space Station, then investigate. A pulse and a distress message from Luke reach the station, and the pulse damages the Earth Return Vehicle's computers, so the Mars II mission is turned into a rescue. Woody Blake commands it, with his wife Terri Fisher, technician Phil Ohlmyer and Jim McConnell, a recent widower who lost his place on the earlier flight. Months later, as they near Mars, satellite images of the formation area are covered in static.

- Brian De Palma was brought on board after the previous director, Gore Verbinski, walked away over concerns about the lack of additional money for the budget. By the time De Palma was hired the script had already been written and the film cast, and much of the budget went into the CGI.
