Plot summary
Cosmic rays that reached Earth in 1983 gave sociopaths superpowers, and the Miscreants left ordinary people afraid. A Miscreant kills the geneticist parents of Emily Stanton, who sets out to find a way to stop them. Lydia Berman becomes her best friend at school and supports her aim of giving ordinary people powers. In 2024 Emily runs her own company, while Lydia works as a longshoreman. When Emily fails to appear at their high school reunion, Lydia goes to pick her up, and a serum Emily has been working on enters Lydia by accident.
