Ed Wynn

Biography

Ed Wynn was a comedian and actor from the United States whose career began in vaudeville in 1903, and he was a Ziegfeld Follies star from 1914. Born in Philadelphia, he created the Perfect Fool character, with its giggly, wavering voice, and over the following decades wrote, directed and produced Broadway shows. In the early 1930s he hosted the radio program The Fire Chief, and his variety series The Ed Wynn Show won an Emmy Award and a Peabody Award in 1949. Late in life he moved into dramatic parts, earning Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for The Great Man and an Academy Award nomination for The Diary of Anne Frank (1959). He voiced the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland (1951), played the Toymaker in Babes in Toyland (1961), and appeared in Mary Poppins (1964), That Darn Cat! (1965), and The Gnome-Mobile (1967), his last film, released after his death.

A role that slipped away
Wynn turned down the offer to play the title role of the Wizard in MGM's 1939 screen adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. The part went to Frank Morgan.
First role
On July 7, 1936, Wynn made his television debut during an NBC experimental broadcast, appearing in a short ad-libbed spot alongside Graham McNamee.
A change of course
In 1933, near the peak of his radio career, Wynn started the Amalgamated Broadcasting System, a radio network of his own. It survived just five weeks.
Behind the camera
Wynn was known for silly costumes and props, and for the giggly, wavering voice he created for the 1921 musical revue The Perfect Fool. He also wrote, directed and produced Broadway shows.
