Plot summary
Cheyenne is a wealthy former rock star, twenty years into a retirement he spends bored in Dublin. He retired after two teenaged fans killed themselves, and he has not spoken to his father in thirty years, since his father rejected him as a fifteen-year-old. Learning that his father is dying, Cheyenne, who will not fly, crosses the ocean by boat to New York to make peace, and arrives too late. In his father's diary he finds an account of Auschwitz, and of a former SS officer named Aloise Lange. A professional Nazi hunter, Mordecai Midler, tells him Lange matters little. Cheyenne sets out across America after him.
