Plot summary
Jay Baruchel visits Seth Rogen in Los Angeles, and Seth takes him to a housewarming party at James Franco's house. Jay feels out of place, so the two go to a convenience store, where a rapture begins. They hurry back to the house, and an earthquake opens a sinkhole that swallows several guests. Jay, Seth, James, Jonah Hill, and Craig Robinson retreat inside, learn from the news that the city is devastated, and board up the house while rationing supplies. Danny McBride, who crashed the party, wakes up the next morning and wastes much of the food, refusing to accept that an apocalypse is underway until a man outside is killed by an unseen creature. Jay argues that the disaster matches the biblical end times, but the others remain skeptical.

- During filming, Emma Watson left the set because she was uncomfortable with the improvised scenes, including the escalating graphic material involving Danny McBride as a cannibal and Channing Tatum as his sex slave; Rogen called it an overall shitty situation and wished he had done more to prevent it.
- This Is the End was the last film ever rented from Blockbuster Video, before the chain went out of business at 11:00 PM on November 9, 2013.

After filming wrapped, Rogen and Goldberg were unhappy with their ending and considered putting Morgan Freeman in Heaven, but he declined, so they closed the film with the Backstreet Boys instead.- The title was changed to This Is the End on December 20, 2012, a day before the Mayan apocalypse prediction, at the request of Simon Pegg, who wrote to Rogen worried that The End of the World was too close to his own film The World's End.
- In a 2023 interview, Jay Baruchel said the on-screen friction between his character and Jonah Hill's in the film was not entirely fictional, admitting the two actors did not get along well back then.
- Rogen and Goldberg's initial version had Seth Rogen and Busta Rhymes on the Sony lot as Antmen attacked from the center of the earth; they combined it with a separate apocalypse short idea and swapped Busta Rhymes for Rogen's friends.
- Two years after the film's release, Universal Studios Hollywood adapted This Is the End into a 3D maze for Halloween Horror Nights in 2015; it was the event's first comedy horror-based attraction.
