Plot summary
In 1940s Nazi Germany, a young Jewish woman held in a concentration camp stays alive by seducing the doctor who runs medical experiments on prisoners there. She marries and settles in New York City, where she raises two sons. By 1993 the brothers are grown, and their mother's behavior has long been erratic. The younger son is neurotic, still living at home with his parents and locked in a compulsive, co-dependent bond with her. The elder son, forty, works for a fraudulent modeling and acting agency that cheats the young and hopeful, and keeps to erotic affairs with a series of women. At the agency he befriends a charming young co-worker.

- Director Boaz Yakin walked away from a studio meeting because what they wanted to do and what he wanted to do were so far apart, then wrote the film for a low-budget production and ended up financing it with his life savings.
- Jacqueline Bisset, who plays the mother, said Boaz asked her to play the role as if she were a wild animal, and in other scenes to play her as moonstruck, a combination she named as one of the things that captivated her about the film.
