Plot summary
John Halder is a German university professor in the 1930s. He lives with his overly anxious wife, two children and a mother who has senile dementia. He writes a paper, "The Case for Mercy Death on the Grounds of Humanity", to explore euthanasia. The paper comes to the notice of the Nazi party, which sends Reichsleiter Philipp Bouhler to help push its agenda and offer Halder a job. His career and social status advance after the paper is published. Maurice, a Jewish psychologist and Halder's best friend from the First World War, voices concerns about his choices.

- Producer Miriam Segal had wanted to film C. P. Taylor's play ever since she saw it in 1981, the year it premiered in London with Alan Howard as John Halder; she said she was overwhelmed by it and knew immediately she would do whatever was necessary to produce the adaptation.
- The rights were not secured until 2003, 22 years after the play's premiere. The producer's former classmate Jason Isaacs then signed on as an executive producer, and Viggo Mortensen, who had been very impressed by the play when visiting London as a young actor in 1981, agreed to play the lead.
