Plot summary
Their young daughter Nellie died a few months earlier, and Abigail and Dyer, who farm in Schoharie County, New York, in 1856, rarely speak of it; both keep to themselves. One night Dyer describes the fear he felt as a boy during an earthquake, and his candor moves Abigail. Tallie and Finney then arrive in the area. Tallie is lively where Abigail and Dyer are withdrawn, and her warmth makes a deep impression, so the two women quickly become friends. Abigail tells Tallie that her marriage to Dyer is a practical arrangement rather than a romance, and Tallie says Finney is prone to quarrels and wants things his way. Tallie gives Abigail an atlas she had wanted for her birthday.
