Antony Sher
Biography
Antony Sher was a British actor, writer and theater director who was born in Cape Town and grew up there in the Sea Point area. He left South Africa for Britain in 1968 and studied drama at the Webber Douglas Academy, then spent the 1970s at the Liverpool Everyman alongside other young actors and writers before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1982. The title part in Richard III, in 1984, made his name and earned him a Laurence Olivier Award, and a second Olivier came in 1997 for the lead in Stanley. Other RSC roles included the Fool in King Lear, Falstaff, Macbeth, and Lear himself between 2016 and 2018. His films included Erik the Viking (1989), The Wind in the Willows (1996) and Mrs Brown (1997), where he played Benjamin Disraeli. He wrote books and plays, directed Breakfast With Mugabe, and was knighted in 2000. He died in 2021.

In 2018, Antony Sher took on the title role in King Lear. At the Royal Shakespeare Company, he was the only actor to have played both the Fool and King Lear.
