Plot summary
Agnes Thornton keeps house at the Elliott mansion for the reclusive Mrs. Elliott and Jeffrey, her sculptor son, and is stabbed to death there. When Agnes stops contacting her father, George, he files a missing person report and comes to the mansion asking after her. College student and aspiring artist Peggy Johns finds a job advertisement on campus and visits the house, where Jeffrey hires her. Mrs. Elliott is ambivalent about the arrangement and suggests more than once that Peggy quit. Peggy notices a photograph of a young blonde woman and learns she is Jennifer, Jeffrey's sister, whom Mrs. Elliott says is living in Europe.
