Plot summary
Rachel Carlson writes murder mysteries and lives in London with her second husband Brian and her five-year-old son Thomas. Busy with a new novel, she lets the boy play outside their canal side home, and he drowns. Months later she still blames herself, cannot finish the book and is close to divorce. She goes north alone to a cottage on the Scottish coast, where she begins to see her son's ghost. A local psychic says the spirit is trying to tell her something, and other residents call the psychic a troubled woman. Rachel also meets Angus McCulloch, the keeper of the lighthouse on the island near her house.
