Plot summary
After her mother's death in a fire, Anna Ivers attempts suicide and spends ten months in a psychiatric institution, with no memory of the night of the blaze and recurring nightmares of it. Her doctor discharges her, and her father, the writer Steven Ivers, brings her to the family's isolated house near the coast. There Anna finds her older sister Alex and learns that Rachel Summers, their mother's live-in nurse, now lives with Steven. The sisters believe the nightmares are messages from their mother pointing to Rachel, and they start looking for proof. Anna also meets her old boyfriend Matt, who says he saw what happened that night.
