Matt Berry
Biography
Matt Berry, an English actor, comedian, musician, and writer, is known for his distinctive voice. His first prominent television part was Todd Rivers and Lucien Sanchez in Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, and he played the tycoon Dixon Bainbridge in The Mighty Boosh. With Rich Fulcher he devised, wrote for, and starred in the BBC Three series Snuff Box, for which he also made the theme and score. He joined The IT Crowd as Douglas Reynholm and later co-created and scored Toast of London, winning a BAFTA for his comedy performance. In What We Do in the Shadows he plays Laszlo, earning an Emmy nomination and two Critics' Choice nominations. His films include The Devil's Chair (2007) and Moon (2009). He has released 11 studio albums, mostly described as psychedelic and folk music.

First role
Berry's first acting job paid 178 pounds a week at the London Dungeon, where he played Jack the Ripper and a judge. He stayed in the role until Garth Marenghi's Darkplace came out.
A change of course
Berry was discouraged from pursuing music at school and barred from taking it as a GCSE because he could not read sheet music.
A first
In July 2018, Berry put out the album Television Themes on Acid Jazz Records, with covers of famous retro TV themes like Sorry!, Doctor Who and Rainbow. It was his first album to reach the UK Top 40 chart.
Behind the camera
Berry met Rich Fulcher while filming The Mighty Boosh, then worked with him to create, write and star in the comedy series Snuff Box on BBC Three. Berry also wrote its main theme and score.
Beyond film
Berry's song Take My Hand, from his album Witchazel, first known as the opening theme of Toast of London, gained new interest when the Netflix documentary miniseries American Murder: Gabby Petito used it for its closing credits in February 2025. U.S. streams topped 579,000 in two weeks.
