Plot summary
Jack Cunningham, an alcoholic ironworker, lives apart from his wife, Angela, and his family voices concern about his habits at Thanksgiving dinner. The next day Father Devine calls from Bishop Hayes, the Catholic high school where Jack was a basketball star, to ask him to take over the team after the previous coach has a heart attack. Jack meets Dan, the assistant coach and an algebra teacher, and the varsity players, who number only six. Bishop Hayes has not reached the playoffs since Jack's own school days. Jack's stricter practices and manner annoy the players at first, and they come to respect him.
