Plot summary
Joshua Connor, a farmer and water diviner, has three sons presumed dead after Gallipoli. His wife Eliza takes her own life in grief, so Joshua resolves to bring the bodies home and bury them beside her. He travels to Turkey and lodges at an Istanbul hotel kept by Ayshe, a war widow. Unable to reach Gallipoli by road, he follows her advice to pay a fisherman for passage by boat. At the peninsula the ANZACs are conducting a mass burial and have barred civilians. Major Hasan, a Turkish officer helping them, asks Lieutenant Colonel Cyril Hughes to assist Joshua's search.

- A social media protest and boycott campaign against the film drew a Facebook page, "Protest and Boycott the Water Diviner", with over 16,000 fans, after descendants of victims of the 1915 Armenian, Assyrian and Greek genocides objected to its portrayal of Turks as victims.
- The film's story came from one line in a letter by Lieutenant-Colonel Cyril Hughes of the Imperial War Graves unit: "One old chap managed to get here from Australia, looking for his son's grave." A year of research failed to identify the man or his son, so the writers invented the rest.
