Plot summary
In O'Hare, California, Pepper Flynt Busbee is eight years old and much shorter than other children his age. A doctor told him to call himself a little boy, a nickname Pepper dislikes. His father, James, is the person he is closest to. When World War II begins, Pepper's older brother London is turned away from service because of flat feet, and James goes in his place, which leaves Pepper crushed. After hearing a verse about faith the size of a mustard seed, Pepper decides to gather enough faith to bring his father home. Father Oliver warns him that hatred makes faith worthless, and that he should befriend a Japanese man named Hashimoto, which Pepper resists because of the hostility toward the Japanese around him.
