Plot summary
Marines of the 28th Marine Regiment train at Camp Tarawa in Hawaii and sail to invade Iwo Jima, where the Navy shells Japanese positions for three days before the landings on February 19, 1945. As the advance reaches Mount Suribachi, Navy corpsman John "Doc" Bradley saves several Marines under fire. A platoon is ordered to the summit to raise an American flag, and Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal asks that the flag be kept for him. Colonel Chandler Johnson has Private First Class Rene Gagnon carry a second flag up.

- Spike Lee, who was making Miracle at St. Anna, criticized Clint Eastwood for not depicting Black Marines in Flags of Our Fathers; Eastwood angrily said Lee should "shut his face", and Lee responded that Eastwood was acting like an "angry old man".
- John Bradley was misidentified as one of the figures who raised the second flag until June 23, 2016, and Rene Gagnon until October 16, 2019; the marines actually in their places, Harold Keller and Harold Schultz, were not depicted in the film.
- While reading about the Japanese perspective of the war, in particular General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, Eastwood decided to film a companion piece with Letters from Iwo Jima, which was shot entirely in Japanese.
- Jared Leto was originally cast as Rene Gagnon but had to back out due to a tour commitment with his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars.
- Although the film is taken from the American viewpoint of the battle, it was filmed almost entirely in Iceland and Southern California, with a few scenes shot in Chicago.
- Scott, the son of director Clint Eastwood, auditioned for one of the leading roles in his father's film, up against Bradley Cooper.
