Mary Anderson
Biography
Mary Anderson was an American actress whose credits took in 31 films and 22 television productions from 1939 to 1965. She was born in Birmingham. After two uncredited parts, her first notable screen role came in Gone With the Wind (1939), where she played Maybelle Merriwether after auditioning among 1,400 actresses considered for Scarlett. She became best known for that supporting part and for Alfred Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1944), in which she played Alice, the nurse, one of ten roles in the film. Her film work ended in the early 1950s, and she acted only now and then on television afterward. That later television work included Catherine Harrington in the 1964 Peyton Place episodes and Arlene Scott in a 1958 Perry Mason episode, The Case of the Rolling Bones.
