Cyril Raymond
Biography
Cyril Raymond was a British character actor whose stage and screen career ran from his teens into the 1960s. Born in 1899, he trained at Sir Herbert Tree's Academy of Dramatic Art and made his professional debut at the Garrick Theatre in London in 1914, in Bluff King Hal. In 1916 he took the juvenile lead, Lord Deerford, in Louis N. Parker's Disraeli, repeating the part in a film version of the play. From the mid-1930s, in the view of The Times, he found his vocation in controlled, humorous performances as a foil to more flamboyant leading ladies, among them Sybil Thorndike in Short Story, Gertrude Lawrence in September Tide and Edith Evans in Waters of the Moon. He played Fred Jesson, husband of Celia Johnson's Laura, in Brief Encounter (1945), and later appeared in a 1961 Danger Man episode and in John Osborne's Inadmissible Evidence in 1965.
