Plot summary
Professor Martin Collingwood leads a program that treats Saturn's moon Titan as humanity's next home, on an Earth in 2048 that is overcrowded and consumed by violent conflict. At the Titan I research site, Air Force pilot Rick Janssen is one of fourteen volunteers whose bodies must adjust to methane liquids at super-cold temperatures and to air with very little oxygen. His wife Abigail works as a medical researcher, and their son Lucas lives at the site with them. The first results are encouraging: Rick swims at remarkable speed and can hold his breath underwater for forty-two minutes. As the training grows more intense, Rick's hair starts to fall out and Abigail notices that the volunteers' veins are darkening. She worries about what the experiment is turning her husband into.
