Plot summary
Andrew Detmer is bullied at his Seattle high school. At home his father Richard is an alcoholic, the family owes money for his mother Karen's cancer care, and his cousin Matt Garetty is the only person he is close to. Casey, Matt's girlfriend, gives him the idea of a video diary, and Matt takes him to a party, where his filming starts a confrontation and he leaves early. Steve Montgomery, a popular student, asks Andrew to bring his camera to a deep hole he and Matt came across in the woods. The three climb down, a glowing object reacts, and the camera dies. Days later, all three can move things with their minds.

- Josh Trank had the idea for Chronicle back in high school. After screenwriter Jeremy Slater moved on, Trank brought in Max Landis, who wrote the first draft in three weeks, having pitched the film behind Trank's back.
- Trank's original draft had the character of Steve being hit by a plane and dying in the middle of the second act. Landis cut it in his revisions, which he said "solved the entire second act".
- Miles Teller auditioned for a role in Chronicle but was turned down because he had already appeared in another found footage film, Project X.
- Because vehicles in South Africa drive on the left with the steering wheel on the right, American-style vehicles had to be shipped in for the production.
- According to Josh Trank, Max Landis was banned from the set during production and the two have not spoken since 2012. Trank confirmed this on Twitter in light of Landis' sexual and emotional abuse accusations.
- For budgetary reasons the film was shot mainly in Cape Town, South Africa, with Film Afrika Worldwide, as well as in Vancouver, Canada.
