Trailer

Plot summary

Emily is reluctant to join her boyfriend Kevin on a long business trip abroad, and the dinner party at Mike and Lee's house grows tense when Amir brings Kevin's ex-girlfriend Laurie. On the night Miller's Comet passes close to Earth, the power fails. Candles and colored glow sticks come out. No one's mobile phone has a signal, and one house down the street still has lights on. Hugh's physicist brother had told him to call if anything strange happened during the comet, so Hugh and Amir set off to ask for the use of a phone. They come back with a box they found there, holding a table-tennis paddle and numbered pictures of every guest.

Cast

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Coherence (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Coherence was shot without a traditional screenplay. Each day, instead of getting a script, the actors would get a page of notes for their individual character, whether a backstory or information about their motivations, and had no idea what the other characters received.
  • Byrkit told an interviewer that for about a year all he did was make charts and maps and draw diagrams of houses, arrows pointing where everyone was going, trying to keep track of different iterations, and look up what actual scientists believe about the nature of reality.
  • Principal photography on Coherence took place over the course of only five nights, and the entire film was shot inside director Byrkit's own house.
  • One night the crew tried to shoot outside and had to make the whole thing look completely desolate, with the power off, but another team was shooting a Snickers commercial on the same street, leaving it completely ablaze with lights and hundreds of extras.
  • Nicholas Brendon, one of the film's actors, said of the improvisational style of its dialogue that since there was no script, he had no idea how it ended.
  • The film was remade in India as Black, a 2024 Tamil-language adaptation written and directed by KG Balasubramani and starring Jiiva and Priya Bhavani Shankar.
