Plot summary
James has been blind since his youth. A pituitary tumor has pressed on the nerves of his own eyes since he was a teenager, and it cannot be treated with surgery. He shares a contented life with Sam, his wife, and their son, Jonah. Then, one day, he regains the sight he lost. The tumor has shrunk for no known reason, and he is giddy with happiness. He and Sam make plans for their future together. In his pursuit of success, though, he becomes fixated on the superficial, and that fixation leaves him metaphorically blind, even though he can now see.
