Plot summary
Shannan Gilbert disappears on Long Island, last seen inside a gated community, and the police response leaves her mother, Mari, unsatisfied. Mari pushes law enforcement to keep looking and takes up the search herself, asking questions around the community where her daughter was last seen. Shannan's sisters are Sherre and Sarra, and Richard Dormer is the police commissioner. As Mari keeps pressing, attention falls on more than a dozen murdered young sex workers whose bodies were found on the barrier islands along the South Shore. Those deaths are attributed to a suspect known as the Long Island serial killer.

- Lost Girls dramatizes the real Long Island serial killer case: the bodies of young sex workers were found on the South Shore barrier islands of Long Island, and in July 2023 a male suspect was charged over several of the deaths.
- Sarah Paulson was set to star as the real-life activist Mari Gilbert in February 2017, but in May 2018 Amy Ryan replaced her in the part when Netflix became the distributor.
- Thomasin McKenzie dropped out of Top Gun: Maverick (2022) to work on Lost Girls, joining the cast in October 2018 with Gabriel Byrne, Oona Laurence, Lola Kirke and Miriam Shor.
