Plot summary
Mary Gilmore is an American painter who lives in Mexico and sells her canvases there. She kills people for their blood; she has no fangs, so she stabs or slashes her victims' throats. When her van breaks down in a thunderstorm in rural Mexico, she takes shelter in an abandoned house occupied by a vagrant named Ben, who offers to stay the night with her. She recalls seducing a United States Embassy employee the night before and drinking his blood. FBI inspector Otis Cosgrove and Lieutenant Eduardo Pons investigate that death and find similar cases in which victims had been drugged and their blood drained. Ben repairs the van, and the two spend a day at the beach.
