Plot summary
A missing person named James Mitchum brings Fletcher Dennis to Northampton. At the local public library he meets the librarian Henry Gaunt, who offers to help him and finds a way into the hospital's computer network, which shows that James was admitted the night before. The leads then take Fletcher to a garden shed, where he meets a pair of adolescent detectives, and on his way out he encounters a local gangster waiting to see them.
