Plot summary
An immigrant couple turned away from Manhattan because they have consumption are sent back to their ship, the City of Justice. They break open a case holding a model of that ship and set their baby afloat in it; he drifts to the New York shore. The boy grows into Peter Lake, a thief in the gang of the demon Pearly Soames. When he decides to leave, his former master marks him for death, and a white horse with wings carries him clear, then steers him toward one more burglary, the mansion where Beverly Penn lives. Consumption keeps her fever so high that she sleeps outdoors in a tent even in winter. Her father Isaac and sister Willa are away, so Beverly finds the intruder herself.
