Plot summary
A year after his daughter Evie was killed in a street accident, psychotherapist Peter Bower still blames himself. His wife Carol rarely gets out of bed, and Peter buries himself in sessions with the patients his mentor Duncan refers to him. One evening a young girl sits in his waiting room. She seems unable to speak and gives him a card naming her Elizabeth Valentine, then writes the numbers 12787 on his notepad and runs off, frightened by a passing train. The next day she appears again and begins choking as another train goes by; Peter records it, but she vanishes before he can talk to her. Duncan hears nothing on the recording and tells Peter he is inventing the girl out of guilt, and he notes that Elizabeth's initials echo his daughter's name.
