Plot summary
An authoritarian media network rules the United States, and most viewers live in poverty. Its most popular program, The Running Man, is hosted by Bobby Thompson. Three runners can win one billion dollars if they survive thirty days, with the Network's five hunters and ordinary citizens pursuing them. Each runner gets a thousand dollars and a twelve-hour head start. In the slums of Co-Op City, Ben Richards has been blacklisted for union activism and cannot buy the flu medicine his two-year-old daughter, Cathy, needs. He auditions for the Network but is chosen for The Running Man.

- In 2017 Edgar Wright expressed interest in directing a remake of The Running Man with Chris Evans in the leading role; the novel had been a dream project since he read it as a teenager, and he was disappointed by the 1987 film.
- Stephen King read and approved the script changes for the 2025 film, finding it captured the book's essence of the protagonist being hunted in the real world, unlike the 1987 film.
- Glen Powell, cast in the lead role in April 2024, said he contacted Arnold Schwarzenegger, who gave the film his "full blessing".
