Plot summary
At his sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg treats well-to-do patients with a regimen of colonic irrigation, electrical stimulus, vegetarianism, exercise and sexual abstinence. William and Eleanor Lightbody, in poor health since the death of their child, arrive for the cure. On the journey they meet Charles Ossining, who wants to make his fortune from the health food cereal craze. Ossining takes Goodloe Bender as a partner and hires George Kellogg, the doctor's estranged adopted son, to produce a rival brand of flakes. Once inside, Will is separated from Eleanor, and he notices Nurse Graves and the patient Ida Muntz, while Eleanor befriends Virginia Cranehill, who holds modern views on sexual pleasure.
