Biography

Carole Shelley was an English actress who built a career in the United States and Britain. Born in London, she first appeared on Broadway as Gwendolyn Pigeon in the 1965 staging of The Odd Couple, then played the same part in The Odd Couple (1968). Her stage work brought a Tony Award for The Elephant Man in 1979 and nominations for her work in Absurd Person Singular, in Stepping Out and in Billy Elliot, and she originated Madame Morrible in Wicked in 2003. On screen she appeared in Carry On Cabby (1963) and The Road to Wellville (1994), voiced Amelia Gabble in The AristoCats (1970), Lady Kluck in Robin Hood (1973), and Lachesis in Hercules (1997), and played Aunt Clara in Bewitched (2005). She also played Helen Moskowitz in a 1998 Frasier episode, and her final role was a cameo in John Mulaney's 2018 comedy special Kid Gorgeous.
