Plot summary
In 1928 in the Iowa farming town of Earling, Emma Schmidt is tormented by night terrors, violent outbursts and a hatred of anything sacred, and she speaks in languages she does not know. Her devout Catholic family is certain a demon has taken hold of her and appeals to the Church. The plea reaches Father Theophilus Riesinger, a seasoned Capuchin priest who conducts exorcisms, and he travels to Iowa with a reluctant companion, the younger Father Joseph Steiger. Steiger doubts that demons are at work and is haunted by his brother's recent suicide. The exorcisms are held in a convent that adjoins a parish church. Riesinger, who knew Emma as a child, works through prayer and talk as well as ritual, and Emma is given a room upstairs.
