Plot summary
Rico is a man in his thirties who goes camping by himself in the Catskill Mountains. A head injury on the trail sends him into a decline that becomes madness. When he returns to his hometown, visions trouble him at night, and he comes to think he is changing into a werewolf. There he reconnects with Mama, the mother he has been estranged from. She is dying of lung cancer, and she is verbally abusive and unsupportive toward him, which only makes his fragile mental state worse. The narrative moves non-linearly, through flashbacks and hallucinations, to show his mind coming apart.
Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Forest Hills (2022)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Forest Hills marked a brief acting comeback for Duvall after a twenty year absence and also served as her final role; she died a few months before the film's release.
- Duvall, who had been retired from acting for 20 years, was initially cast in a cameo similar to "a Friday the 13th Pamela Voorhees type of flashback"; her role was expanded after she expressed interest in performing more scenes.
- Because of Shelley Duvall's health and physical limitations at the time, much of her work was done remotely or in short sequences; after the early screenings the team filmed additional sequences, making the "Festival Cut" substantially different from that first rushed edit.
