Plot summary
A Miami-Dade Police Department narcotics unit, the Tactical Narcotics Team, falls under scrutiny after its captain, Jackie Velez, is murdered and word spreads of officers robbing dealers. Lieutenant Dane Dumars, her deputy, brings a tip to detectives J.D. Byrne, Mike Ro, Numa Baptistie and Lolo Salazar about a Hialeah house. Desi Molina, granddaughter of its late owner, lets them in. The attic holds $20 million in cartel cash. Dumars gives each detective a different figure for the money, then defies protocol, not calling higher command and taking the team's phones. Two Hialeah patrol officers arrive, and the detectives arm themselves to count the cash on site. Ro uses a burner phone out of sight. Desi says she was instructed to give up part of the money should the stash be discovered.

- Artists Equity's deal with Netflix was a first of its kind: the streamer agreed to pay a one-time bonus to the 1,200 people who worked on the film if it met performance benchmarks within its first 90 days, instead of its usual single upfront fee.
- On May 7, 2026, Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office deputies Jonathan Santana and Jason Smith sued Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for defamation, claiming their portrayal made them look like "dirty cops" and caused substantial harm to their reputations.
- Netflix's script stipulations for The Rip, as Matt Damon described them, asked for a big action set piece in the first five minutes and for the plot to be laid out three or four times in the dialogue, because viewers are on their phones while watching.
- The film was inspired by the real case of Miami-Dade County Police Captain Chris Casiano, whose 2016 raid with his narcotics squad on a Miami Lakes residence uncovered $20 million hidden inside; the corrupt cop in the film is entirely fictional.
- Damon's officer is based on Captain Chris Casiano, and the story drew on Casiano's own son, who died of leukemia in 2021; in the film the character grieves a 10-year-old son lost to cancer.
