Jed Prouty

Biography

Jed Prouty was an American actor who started on the vaudeville stage before moving into films. Born in Boston, he built a significant silent-screen career, appearing in Colleen Moore pictures including Ella Cinders (1926) and also Orchids and Ermine (1927). He became known mostly for comedy, though he sometimes took serious character parts, as in A Star is Born (1937). His comic turn in the early musical The Broadway Melody (1929) helped establish him in talking pictures. A role in Bachelor of Arts (1934) led to a Fox contract, where he worked with Will Rogers in Life Begins at 40 (1934) and later headlined the Jones Family comedies, including Every Saturday Night (1936), part of a series of seventeen low-budget family films made between 1936 and 1940. Good notices for Hollywood Cavalcade (1939) preceded a contract dispute that ended his Fox tenure. He kept playing character roles in films through 1950 and on television through 1952.

Big break
After appearing in the independent film Bachelor of Arts (1934), which Fox released, Prouty signed a contract with Fox. At that studio he acted alongside Will Rogers in Life Begins at 40 (1934).
