Plot summary

Two expeditions climb toward the top of Mount Everest, one led by Rob Hall and the other by Scott Fischer. Their clients move up through Camps 2, 3 and 4. At Camp 2, Fischer descends with a client who is sick. At the Hillary Step no fixed ropes are in place, because the Sherpa who was to help set them is tired and ill after hauling Sandy Pittman and her equipment up the mountain. Anatoli Boukreev and Neal Beidelman fix the ropes. Jon Krakauer, with Hall's group, continues with Boukreev, and Andy Harris joins them.
