Plot summary
On a blue-skinned planet, the band Stella, Octave, Arpegius and Baryl play a stadium show broadcast across the planet. An Earth military force invades and seizes them; Arpegius slips away but a tranquilizer dart brings him down. The pilot Shep, who daydreams about Stella, answers a distress call and chases the kidnappers through a wormhole, crash landing on Earth. In an underground facility, the captives' memories are moved onto disks and replaced, their skin is altered to pass as human, and mind-control devices are hidden in their sunglasses. Their captor, Earl de Darkwood, acts as their manager and launches them as The Crescendolls, a hit act worn down by signing sessions. Shep reaches the city and learns what has become of them.

- Daft Punk had initially conceived of a live-action film featuring themes of overcoming oppression and rebelling against the machinery of life. After that approach was discarded, several styles of animation were considered before settling on that of the duo's childhood hero, Leiji Matsumoto.
- The original masters were unrecoverable from Japan, and conversion between NTSC and PAL encodings during production had created framerate and resolution issues, so the remaster used AI upscaling to allow a more presentable theatrical exhibition. The use of AI was criticized by Daft Punk fans.
- Daft Punk commuted to Tokyo on a near-monthly basis as Toei produced the storyboards, and the production cost was reportedly $4 million.
- Octave, the keyboardist and vocalist of the Crescendolls, is not sung by an actor: his singing voice is provided by Romanthony's performance of "One More Time" and "Too Long".
- On 22 February 2024, Daft Punk streamed the film in full on Twitch as the third celebration of "Daft Punk Day", the anniversary of the duo's split.
