Plot summary
The piano's carvings show the faces of African ancestors, and in 1911 Boy Charles took it from the Sutter family, who had enslaved his relatives. In 1936 his son Boy Willie comes to Pittsburgh from Mississippi with his friend Lymon and a truckload of watermelons. He means to sell the instrument and use the money for Sutter farmland. Berniece, his sister, lives in the house of their uncle Doaker with her young daughter Maretha and will not give the piano up, calling it a memorial to the family's struggles. Brother and sister have been estranged since the wood theft he and Lymon were caught up in, which left her husband Crawley dead. She is now seeing Avery, a local preacher, and another uncle, Wining Boy, comes to visit.
