Biography
Erykah Badu is a Dallas-born American singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress. She began performing as a child at the Dallas Theater Center and later studied theater at Grambling State University before leaving to focus on music. After opening for D'Angelo in 1994, she signed with Kedar Entertainment and released her debut album, Baduizm (1997), which made her a leading figure in neo soul and won Grammy Awards. Its singles included On & On. Later albums include Mama's Gun (2000), Worldwide Underground (2003), and New Amerykah Part One (2008), with Bag Lady and Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop) among her hits. As an actress, she appeared in Blues Brothers 2000 (1998), The Cider House Rules (1999), House of D (2004), and Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2005). She has won 16 awards from 59 nominations.

Badu changed her first name from Erica to Erykah because she considered the original a "slave name," and took the surname Badu from her favorite jazz scat sound.
First role
Badu made her acting debut in the 1998 film Blues Brothers 2000 as Queen Mousette, a role in a film that was a commercial failure.
