Plot summary
Odysseus left Ithaca for Troy twenty years ago and has not come home. Suitors, among them the nobleman Antinous, press his wife Penelope to marry so that one of them can claim the throne. Penelope, her son Telemachus, and the swineherd Eumaeus are the only ones who still expect him to return. Telemachus travels with Mentor to Sparta to ask Menelaus what became of his father. Calypso, the nymph of Ogygia, is infatuated with Odysseus, and the goddess Athena orders him home.

- The Odyssey became the first feature film ever shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, using a lighter, quieter IMAX camera that Christopher Nolan had specifically commissioned to be manufactured for the production.
- Universal put select opening-weekend IMAX 70mm tickets on sale a full year before release, an unprecedented move for a major distributor, and some showings sold out within 12 hours, including half of the 22 U.S. theaters carrying the format, taking in about $1.5 million.
- The giant Laestrygonians were created practically by pairing seven-foot-tall stuntmen with five-foot body doubles for the rest of the cast, and Matt Damon's own double for the scene was four-foot-six stuntwoman Devyn Dalton, whose silhouette also appears on one of the film's posters.
- To play Odysseus, Matt Damon followed a strict gluten-free diet to cut his weight to 167 pounds and grew a real beard for a full year, after Nolan ruled out fake facial hair to keep "the physicality of real hair."
- Production designer Ruth De Jong built a 36-foot-tall, 8,800-pound model of the Trojan Horse, which had to be transported to the shoreline set in 27 separate crates.
- Filming scenes with Matt Damon and Zendaya at the White Dune near Dakhla in Western Sahara, territory under Moroccan occupation since 1975, drew condemnation from the UN-recognized Polisario Front and the Sahara International Film Festival, who called the choice a whitewashing of Morocco's colonialism.
- Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis personally congratulated Christopher Nolan by video call after the film's success, thanking him for promoting ancient Greek culture and for choosing Greece as the production's principal shooting location.
- Emily Wilson, the classicist whose 2017 translation of the Odyssey inspired Nolan's approach, was sharply critical of the finished film, calling it a simple action movie that was abysmally written and had nothing convincing to say about the poem's major themes.
