Plot summary
Jake Chambers, eleven, draws what his visions show him: a camp where children are held in Mid-World, and Walter Padick, the Man in Black, who works to bring down the Dark Tower. His mother, his stepfather and his doctors take the visions for grief over his father's death. When workers claiming to come from a psychiatric facility arrive to collect him, Jake spots a scar from the fake skin at one of their necks and flees. An answer to his online question places the house from his drawings in Brooklyn, where a machine opens a portal to Mid-World. There he meets Roland Deschain, a gunslinger, who tells him Walter uses children with the shine to topple the Tower that joins their worlds.
