Plot summary
Edgin Darvis, a bard, and Holga Kilgore, a barbarian, are imprisoned for grand larceny after a heist went wrong. Two years later they escape from Revel's End and return to Neverwinter, where Edgin's daughter Kira has been living under the care of Forge Fitzwilliam, who has become the city's Lord. Forge has convinced Kira that Edgin's greed caused his arrest. To win her back, Edgin and Holga plan to rob Forge's vault during the High Sun Games, seeking the Tablet of Reawakening to prove Edgin's innocence and resurrect his wife. They recruit Simon Aumar, a half-elf sorcerer, and Doric, a druid fighting Forge's logging of her forest.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Before shooting in Northern Ireland, Goldstein had the cast play a several-hours-long game of Dungeons & Dragons in which the actors role-played as their film characters; he said it gave newcomers a taste of the game and that things learned from it were worked into the film.
- Justice Smith, who plays the sorcerer, worked with the choreographer to create a unique gesture for each spell, and many of the spells' gestures incorporated actual sign language.
- Bradley Cooper was cast in his cameo role during post-production, filmed his part on blue screen, and was then inserted into preexisting footage that had been shot with Michelle Rodriguez.
- Two days after Warner Bros. and Courtney Solomon's Sweetpea Entertainment announced a Dungeons & Dragons film in May 2013 with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick writing, Hasbro sued, saying it was co-producing its own film at Universal Pictures with Chris Morgan writing and directing.
- In June 2016, Ansel Elgort was in talks to star in the iteration of the film that was then being developed with Letterman as its director.
- Revel's End, the maximum-security prison location created for the film, became a heist setting in the Dungeons & Dragons adventure anthology Keys from the Golden Vault (2023), which places it in the fictional Icewind Dale, though it had first appeared in the 2020 module Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.
