Sergei Polunin
Biography
Sergei Polunin is a ballet dancer, actor and model from Russia who was born in Kherson and began in gymnastics before taking up ballet at eight. He trained at the Kyiv State Choreographic College and joined the Royal Ballet School in 2003, winning the Prix de Lausanne and the Youth America Grand Prix in 2006 and being named Young British Dancer of the Year in 2007. In 2010 he became the Royal Ballet's youngest male principal. After resigning in 2012 he worked as a guest artist with companies including the Bolshoi, La Scala, Teatro San Carlo and the Bayerisches Staatsballet. He danced the Knave in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (2011) and appeared in the 25th anniversary Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011). He was the subject of the documentary Dancer (2016), made his feature debut in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), and appeared in Red Sparrow (2018) and The White Crow (2018).

In 2003, at 13, Polunin enrolled at the British Royal Ballet School, with the Rudolf Nureyev Foundation providing his sponsorship. He had graduated from the Kyiv Choreographic Academy before that.

In the 25th Anniversary staging of The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall, Polunin played Slavemaster/Shepherd, the part that first brought him international attention.
Big break
Polunin's collaboration with David LaChapelle, an American photographer and music director, began in 2014. He appeared in a dance video for Hozier's "Take Me to Church" in February 2015, which went viral and reached a wider audience.
