Richard Hunt

Biography

Richard Hunt was an American puppeteer and actor who became a Muppet performer for the Jim Henson Company. Born in The Bronx, he came from a performing family and staged puppet shows while in school. After high school he briefly gave weather reports at a radio station, then telephoned Jim Henson and was asked to audition. Hired for Sesame Street, Hunt started with background characters and later played Don Music, Forgetful Jones, Gladys the Cow, and Sully, and he briefly performed Elmo before Kevin Clash took over. On The Muppet Show he portrayed Scooter, Statler, Janice, Beaker, and Sweetums, and he shared Miss Piggy with Frank Oz for part of the first season. For Fraggle Rock he performed Junior Gorg and Gunge. In The Frog Prince, one of his earliest prominent performances, he operated Taminella Grinderfall while Jerry Juhl supplied the voice. Hunt also directed home videos, including Elmo's Sing-Along Guessing Game and Sing-Along, Dance-Along, Do-Along. He died in 1992.
