Plot summary
Born from a stone on a mountain top, a monkey disturbs the Jade Emperor, who orders the infant done away with. Buddha tells him to let the child find his purpose. The monkey joins a troop of his own kind but his unruly nature keeps him apart, and when a demon snatches an infant, the troop sends him away. He trains for years to fight the demon and goes looking for a weapon suited to the task.

- Reel FX was first tasked with animating The Monkey King, but the work moved to Tangent Animation, which shut down on August 4, 2021 and halted production. Netflix was reportedly unhappy with Tangent's work, so Reel FX's Montreal facilities took over.
