John Clements
Biography
John Clements was a British performer and producer whose career spanned the stage, television and cinema. He turned professional in 1930, then worked with Nigel Playfair before joining Ben Greet's Shakespearean Company. In 1935 he set up the Intimate Theatre at Palmers Green, a house for repertory and try-out productions, and acted in close to 200 plays while also staging West End shows as actor-manager-producer. His early screen work was for Alexander Korda's London Films, where his parts grew steadily. He drew attention in Knight Without Armour, and Victor Saville cast him opposite Ralph Richardson in South Riding (1938); the two reunited for The Four Feathers (1939). Later came war pictures such as Convoy (1940) and Tomorrow We Live (1942), and a cameo in Gandhi (1982). In 1951 he staged Man and Superman in the West End and led the Chichester Festival Theatre as artistic director from 1966 to 1973.
