Plot summary
Rufus Excalibur ffolkes is a counter-terrorism consultant who keeps cats, does needlepoint embroidery and drinks a good deal of scotch. Lloyd's of London, which insures North Sea oil installations, asks him to work out ahead of time how an attack on one of them could be answered. Months later the supply ship Esther carries men posing as reporters out to the production platform Jennifer. At sea they draw guns and, under Lou Kramer, take the vessel. Limpet mines go onto Jennifer and onto the drilling rig Ruth beside it, and the British government receives a ransom demand of 25 million pounds. The Prime Minister will not give way to extortion, so her advisers turn to Lloyd's, whose officers put ffolkes forward. Admiral Brinsden is sent to supervise.

- North Sea Hijack was a vehicle for Roger Moore and Anthony Perkins to escape typecasting: Moore had been typecast as a womanising, happy-go-lucky playboy in The Saint, The Persuaders! and as James Bond, so here he plays a bearded, eccentric, cat-loving chauvinist who does needlepoint embroidery.
