Plot summary
Tim Walker, a London teenager, visits his dying father, who urges him to follow his dream of studying music in Austria and gives him an ornate red book to return to the school. Tim enrolls, hears about auditions for The Magic Flute opera, and befriends Sophie and Paolo; Headmaster Longbow makes him sing before his classmates without warning. A glowing orb leads him to a library clock above a shelf with an empty space. He slides the red book in and is carried into the opera as Prince Tamino. Three orbs say that playing the part will bring him what he desires, and that refusing means sharing that world's fate, eternal night. He agrees. The bird-catcher Papageno appears, and the Queen of Night and her ladies hand Tim a magic flute for the rescue of Pamina from Sarastro.
